The distinctive features of the typology and architecture of underground urban planning objects in the Donetsk region

Abstract: The article deals with specification of typology and sociocultural role of underground and embedded objects in the cities of the Donetsk region, where the coal-mining industry historically is one of the basic town-forming branches. The culture of the region endues the underground space with the special philosophical content and symbolic value. The types of underground and embedded objects which are abundant in the region are considered, the specific examples of the objects with the description of their architectural concept features are provided. Their role in organization of architectural, compositional and artistic interaction of aboveground and underground spaces – one of the directions for the development of the Donetsk region architectural style, is emphasized.
